Welcome to Evil People I Know
A place for people to have serious discussions about identifying -- and managing -- Evil People in their lives. (With an emphasis on Evil family members.) I have found that when I was studying disorders to define my parents and siblings, "control-freaks" was too weak, and narcissism wasn't right. I believe my relatives are Evil (I always capitalize that) but that Evil isn't covered in the literature. Gandhi said, "Be the change that you want to see in the world," so I set out to define Evil. Here I defer to the wonderful J.E. Brown: "Why isn't there a single agreed-upon definition of Evil? Because all people, Evil or not, have a vested interest in defining Evil so that it doesn't include the definer." (Here)
I think that's hilarious...and true. I'm fearless when it comes to defining Evil, so I jumped in with both feet. In 2008 I wrote that, "The essence of Evil is the deep-seated need to control others." I've since refined that. As of 2011 I say that, "The essence of Evil is the deep-seated need to trap and control others." Because with family, trapping the victim is so often an element of controlling them. Evil is not an abstraction. It's everywhere. But the one place (in America) that it is most likely to affect your life, is not out on the streets, it's in your own home.
My Definition of "Family":
- They bind you together...and then destroy you.
- (See above.)
The family you created needs you more than the family that created you.
Some good sites to study narcissism:
